In 1960 Cyprus became independent from Britain as the Republic of Cyprus (since 1925 it had been a Crown Colony). Prolonged conflict between the Greek Cypriot majority and the Turkish Cypriot minority and the invasion of the island by Turkish troops in 1974 led to the de facto division of the island (although not internationally recognized) and the establishment of a de facto Turkish Republic in 1975. The state of Cyprus in the northern part of the country issued a unilateral declaration of independence in 1983 and chose the name of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. Its independence was recognized only by Turkey.
